Independent Reading Book #1For my first IRB I chose to read 13 Reasons Why By Jay Asher. This book is a boy listening to the recordings of a girls 13 reasons for committing suicide. It is a strong and emotional book with very realalistic stories of a high schooler. I would definatly recommend this book to others. However, I would warn that it is a very emotional book and might not be a good choice for some.

Independent Reading Book #2For my second IRB I decided to read Q & A by Vikas Swarup. This book tells the story of a poor orphan who goes on a gameshow and wins a billion dollars. However, the gameshow creators believe it is not possible for him to have won, and therefore he's cheated. When arrested, a long lost friend, who's now a lawyer, comes to help him by having him explain how he knew the answer to each of the 13 questions. The 2008 movie Slumdog Millionare was based off of this book. I would recommend this book, but warn it has some slow parts. The beginning is good and the end is exciting but the middle has a few stories that didn't interest me. However, they might interest others.

Independent Reading Book #3For my third book I read Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen. This book is about a boy who drops out of college and joins the circus. While in the circus as a vet he is faced with many challenges. His biggest challenges are how to deal with loving a girl who's married, and how to deal with the stupidest elephant ever. I, personally, loved this book. I tend to like books that have animals in them. I would recommend this book. I would warn that there are some inappropriate parts for younger people reading this. However, it also does a good job of addressing some tough topics.

Independent Reading Book #4For my fourth and final book I chose to read The Secret Life of Bees, by Sue Monk Kidd. This book is the story of a girl whos mom dies when she is young, and lives with her abusive dad. At age 14, with her black nanny, she runs away to find out more about her mysterious mom. She ends up finind the family who was her moms nanny and gets to live with them. I really enjoyed this book and al the great messages it had within it. I loved how the girl, Lily, was able to find out so much with so little. It took generousity and understanding of others. I also like how it was set in the past. There were hints to the everlasting racism of that time. I would definatly recomend this book for others to read.
