Introduction
This project is a redo of the project we did last year but instead of using physics and engineering concepts we used biotech ideas. We used these concepts to try to solve a world problem that exists. We were given 3 weeks to finish this. First we found and research a problem, then we came up with solutions, then we narrowed it down to one problem and full on researched that solution to come up with our project.

Concepts used
hydroponics:
We are planning on using the NFT form of hydroponics. This system starts with a container of the nutrient water. This water is given nutrients by a pump which is on a timer set to release nutrients for about 3 minutes every hour. The water is pumped into a pvc pipe where it runs along the bottom of the pipe and back into the container with water. The PVC pipe the water runs down would have holes in the top of it where the plants would be. There roots would hang down into the water too get there nutrients.
The water used for the hydroponics will come right from the lake that barge is on. Before the water can be used it has to be filtered. It would go through three steps. First would be physical filtration to remove bigger and physical waste from the water. Then water goes through chlorination filtration we remove all biological waste. The the water goes through Reverse Osmosis (RO) System to remove the chlorine.
Nutrients:
Overpopulation :
The United Nations has predicted that the population of Earth will continue to grow and reach somewhere between 9.6 and 12.3 billion by 2100. This is a huge number, and the finite resources of Earth will not be able to support the human population forever. Additionally, other factors like climate change are depleting resources like water and increasing the strain on our environment. Some estimates, like from BBC, say that Earth’s natural resources will run out within the next century, probably even sooner. The carrying capacity of the Earth is slowly going down, while the population is rapidly increasing.
This massive population growth and resource depletion is mainly happening in cities. However, many of these cities, especially in Africa and Asia, cannot support this new influx of people, because they are limited in size and resources. We need a way to make more food to sustain the growing number of people.

Nutrients:
- Fish wast has been usted for years as a fertilizer for plants
- NPK- nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium
- We can collect fish waste from the lake and use the nutrients in our hydroponic nutrient solution
- Fish waste and purchased nutrient solution can be combined for the best crop yield

Water filtration :
- Step 1 Physical Filtration - Netting and/or mesh to catch waste.
- Step 2 Biological Filtration - Chlorination kill biological waste.
- Step 3 Disinfection - Remove chlorination from water
