The Physics of a Volleyball Serve
|
How we did it. To make this video our group of four used seven class days. We had to start by figuring out what sport we wanted to make our video about. We decided on volleyball since two of our group members play it. We decided to do a volleyball serve since it had easily definable vertical and horizontal components that we could find the velocity of.
We started by finding the horizontal velocity. We found this by using distance/time. Then we found the Vertical velocity. We did this by finding the acceleration due to gravity times the time. Then we used Pythagorean theorem to find the total velocity of the serve. Finally, we found the force the server hit the ball with by using what we had found with total velocity and plugging it into the equation Ft=MV. |
Concepts Used
Force - Is the push or pull on an object. It causes a change in motion. We found how much force the server hit the ball with.
Velocity-The distance and direction something moves over a time. We found the horizontal, vertical, and total velocity of the volleyball once it was served.
Algebra- We used many different algebra concepts to figure out equations and solve for variables.

Reflection
We made this video by using Microsoft Movie Maker. We found clips on YouTube and online and downloaded them. Next, we edited them to the best of our abilities, with some videos we had taken, to make this. This was a new thing for me. I have never downloaded videos, edited videos, or used moviemaker before. The idea of putting one noise over the original noise was something I didn't know was so easily done. The ideas we used to find the velocity was new to me too. I didn't know that velocity was made by finding information about the balls travel in a certain direction and the making a diagram to find the total.
On the other side, during this project my group and me ran in to a couple of problems. First, we needed to find videos to use in our final video. We found this hard because most professional volleyball players jump serve. It is more effective in a game. Also, we new the video was for San Marin athletics so figured having the video be of a San Marin sports team would be a better idea. We ended up being able to find a video of a San Marin volleyball game that we could use. An issue I had in the project was staying on task. There was only one computer and four people in our group so it was had not to get off task during our work time. Though, I was pretty good at doing the math for our project. I figured out the velocities and force, and wrote them out for our video. I feel I was also somewhat good at keeping others in my group on task.
